Zoe was asleep in the passenger seat beside me as we passed through Virginia. She had insisted that we take her Honda Civic down to North Carolina, but I insisted on driving it. She’d gotten off work at seven o’clock that morning, then had come by my place to pick me up and we had left from there.

We were barely into New Jersey when she fell asleep. She looked so peaceful with her head nuzzled into her pillow, which was pressed up against the window. It’d been nearly a week since I’d left her house on New Year’s Day. I’d relived that night in my head so many times since then. I’d never slept in bed with a girl before without there being some kind of sex involved, and I’d never slept better than I had with her in my arms. Cuddling had never been my style either, but I’d held onto Zoe that entire night. I’d woken up before her, but I hadn’t dared to move. I hadn’t known if I’d ever get that opportunity again and I had been reveling in it.

As I’d held her close, listening to the faint sound of her breathing, I’d thought back to what had happened between us that night. When she had cried into my chest, it had nearly broken me. I swear I’d fucking felt her pain as though I had lived it, and I’d even shed a few tears myself. After she had pulled away from me, her makeup had made a mess of her face, her eyes had been puffy and her skin had reddened. She’d been a mess, but in that moment, I understood what it truly meant to be beautiful. It was one thing to have a pretty face, but true beauty showed itself in one’s most vulnerable state, and she’d allowed herself to go there with me. And that was beautiful.

As much as I wanted to make Zoe my girlfriend, that night had shown me just how much she needed a friend. I couldn’t imagine what it was like for her to go through life virtually alone, and I cared about her so much that I knew I needed to be there for her in whatever capacity she felt comfortable with. I’d be fucking lying if I said I didn’t plan to try and make her my girlfriend one day, but I had decided to pump the brakes and wait for her to be ready. She had said she was open to the possibility of considering a relationship, so I knew I just had to bide my time. I didn’t want to push her too far, too fast.

After an eight-hour drive, with one coffee break in Maryland, we arrived at our modest, three-star hotel in Raleigh. Zoe had woken up when we’d pulled off of the highway, surprised that she’d slept for so long. Before we’d left she’d argued with me about driving, but we had compromised by saying that I’d take the first shift and then she could drive the rest of the way.
